  • Sacha Baron Cohen looks hot. That doesn’t make him MAGA

Sacha Baron Cohen looks hot. That doesn’t make him MAGA

Since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, I’ve noticed a steady stream of rhetoric that attempts to make health and fitness partisan.

    play

It’s the heart of summer, and the days are long and toasty. Beaches on the coasts (or Lake Michigan, closer to where I live) are packed and clothing is minimal.

Some people look good showing extra skin. Most of them don’t.

The reality is that more than 70% of Americans are overweight or obese, and the trend has been moving rapidly in the wrong direction, leading to a plethora of preventable health problems and costs associated with them.

It’s concerning, and the effort to combat obesity should be something we can all agree on.

    Sadly, it’s not.

Since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, I’ve noticed a steady stream of rhetoric that attempts to make health and fitness partisan.

If you’re fit and enjoy working out (or even sport a tan), chances are there’s a progressive who will eye you with suspicion of being MAGA.

It’s an extreme example of the “if-Trump-is-for-it, we-must-be-adamantly-against-it” mentality that has infected the left.

To borrow a phrase from former Democratic vice presidential contender Tim Walz, it’s weird.

Trump wants kids to be more fit. Why is that a negative?

Trump brought physical fitness into the limelight on July 31 by signing an executive order reestablishing the Presidential Fitness Test for America’s public school students. The test had been around for decades until the 2012-13 school year, when President Barack Obama replaced it.

The order states: “We must address the threat to the vitality and longevity of our country that is posed by America’s declining health and physical fitness. For far too long, the physical and mental health of the American people has been neglected.”

The rise in obesity and the decline in health is especially disheartening when it comes to the country’s kids.

According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2024 report, about 20% of children are obese (2 in 5 adults are obese). That’s a sharp increase from when childhood obesity rates were 5% in the 1970s.

Not only is this a national health concern, it’s a national security one, as Trump acknowledges in his executive order.

The CDC report found that only 2 in 5 young adults are weight-eligible and active enough to serve in the military.

“The military has experienced increasing difficulty in recruiting soldiers as a result of physical inactivity, obesity, and malnutrition among our nation’s youth,” retired Army Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling said in the report.

Yet, Trump’s commonsense approach to boost fitness was met with consternation among media progressives.

“Trump is reviving an outdated and problematic practice for American schoolkids,” proclaimed MSNBC.

“Generations of Americans who struggled to complete a pull-up in front of their classmates winced as President Trump announced that he was reinstating the annual assessment,” The New York Times opined.

Doing Pilates does not make you an authoritarian. Nor does having a tan.

Leftists also have thoughts about fitness for adults and what it says about conservatism.

Earlier this year, fitness influencer MaryBeth Monaco-Vavrik posted a video that went viral connecting the “popularization of Pilates & running instead of strength training … and the rise of extreme American authoritarianism.” She also equated conservatism with “smaller bodies.”

Men, on the other hand, must avoid looking too manly and the trap of toxic masculinity and the “manosphere,” which liberals tell us have flourished under Trump. For instance, actor Sacha Baron Cohen’s appearance on the August cover of Men’s Fitness UK sparked criticism over his newly chiseled body.

One headline said his physique “is repellent to most women.”

(It must be because I’m a conservative woman, but I found Baron Cohen’s new look the opposite of repellent.)

In 2024, a columnist in The Guardian warned, “There is a dark side to wellness, which I always, for shorthand, thought of as political: getting fit makes you more rightwing.”

And now, enjoying sunshine and getting a tan could mark you as a MAGA fanatic. After all, Trump and his health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., sport a perennial bronze shade.

As The Atlantic recently observed: “Tanning is back. Only this time, it’s not just about looking good − it’s about embracing an entire ideology.”

I’d wager the vast majority of people who are fit and spend time outdoors do so because they know it’s beneficial for their health and simply enjoy it. It has nothing to do with Trump or how they vote.

Progressives trying to demonize fitness to “get back” at Trump are hurting themselves − and the next generations of Americans.

    3. Keep Software Up-to-Date: Regularly update your operating system, browser, and other software to ensure you have the latest security patches and features.
    4. Be Cautious with Email Attachments and Links: Avoid opening suspicious email attachments or clicking on links from unknown sources, as they may contain malware or phishing scams.
    5. Use a Reputable Antivirus Software: Consider using a reputable antivirus software, in addition to Windows Defender, to provide an extra layer of protection against cyber threats.

  • Where Is Kelly Ripa on ‘Live With Kelly and Mark’? Jackie Tohn Fills In

Where Is Kelly Ripa on ‘Live With Kelly and Mark’? Jackie Tohn Fills In

After Mark Consuelos skipped several episodes of Live With Kelly and Mark last week, Kelly Ripa is enjoying some time off of her own.

Ripa was noticeably missing from the daytime talk show’s Monday, August 4, episode, which was prerecorded. In her absence, Nobody Wants This star Jackie Tohn joined Consuelos at the hosting desk.

“Tune in tomorrow 8/4 at 9am (check ur local listies)… but only if you’re into watching me have one of the best days of my life,” she captioned an Instagram clip of herself and Consuelos making their show entrance on Sunday, August 3.

She reposted the video via her Instagram Story, joking, “I’M KELLY RIPA NOW* *(for tomorrow. for one day. which is tomorrow.)”

Viewers weighed in on Tohn’s hosting performance via social media. “Jackie was a great co-host!! She’s amazing! Such a natural! You must have her co-host again!!!” one user wrote on the show’s Facebook page on Monday. Another added, “Great show, great co-host. I found it refreshing that she could talk fast and didn’t take forever to get a story out.”

Sharing a different opinion, a third user commented, “The guest co host she talked so fast I couldn’t keep up to what she was saying and really wasn’t giving Mark a chance to talk.” A separate user shared, “Didn’t care for her too over zealous!”

Consuelos did not address the reason for his wife’s absence, though he missed the majority of Live‘s episodes last week to work on a new TV show in Los Angeles. Jerry O’Connell filled in for him on the show’s Tuesday, July 29, episode, followed by David Muir on Wednesday, July 30, Carson Kressley on Thursday, July 31, and Steve Patterson on Friday, August 1.

Around this time last year, Ripa missed Live for her “annual summer vacation,” per Decider, and she traveled to California to receive the title of Disney Legend at the D23 Expo. “Congrats to the newest @Disney legend, Kelly!” Live’s official X page captioned photos of Ripa posing with Mickey Mouse, Consuelos, and their daughter, Lola, at the event.

Ahead of her current absence, Ripa recalled how Consuelos was hesitant to join Live as her permanent cohost on the Thursday episode of Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast. “He’s like, ‘No, it’s fun to do [it] once in a while, because it’s only once in a while,’” she shared. “But then, I sort of said, ‘It’s so great. It’s so much easier than doing a soap. It’s such a finite amount of time, and you can still go off and have a full life.’ And so, I think that has made it really easy.”

She continued, “The best thing about hosting a talk show together is people are like, ‘You guys, what happens, aren’t you worried about if you have an argument and then you have to go on the air?’ And I’m like, ‘We have arguments on the air.’ And it’s great to have an argument on the air because your audience becomes your counselors and they will let you know who is wrong and who is right. Spoiler alert, I’m usually right.”

After guest hosting several times over the years, Consuelos joined the series full-time in 2023 following the departure of Ripa’s former cohost, Ryan Seacrest.

    • Wednesday season 2, Part One debuts on Aug. 6, followed by Part Two on Sept. 3

Fred Armisen says he picked up an important lesson from his Wednesday costar Jenna Ortega while filming season 2 of the hit Netflix show.

Armisen, who plays Uncle Fester on the series, spoke to PEOPLE exclusively while attending the Wednesday season 2, Part One World Premiere in London on July 30. During the conversation at Central Hall Westminster, the SNL alum shares that Ortega, 22, inspired him to be more “meticulous” and “pay attention” as a scene partner.

“It’s great watching Jenna, because she keeps track of the script in this way that she understands the logic of her character,” Armisen, 58, says.

He adds, “It’s not like she just shows up and it’s like, ‘I’m just gonna do this character.’ She’s like, ‘Why does this moment count? So she’s very meticulous, and it makes me want to be more like her. I’m like, ‘No, I gotta […] pay attention.’ ”

The comedian goes on to share one of his favorite behind-the-scenes moments while filming the upcoming season.

“There was a scene in the insane asylum, and it’s raining and it really felt like ‘Wow. I’m really on a TV show,’ you know? This fake rain and lightning and stuff, and it, it just makes me feel like if I was a little kid watching myself, I’d be like, ‘Wow, I’m really on a TV show.’ “

Armisen isn’t the only Wednesday actor to rave about Ortega’s talent and work ethic. Season 2 star Steve Buscemi called the actress “the best” while speaking exclusively to PEOPLE while attending the Family Dinner fundraising event hosted by Exploring the Arts in New York City in April.

  • Madonna Biopic Still On, Says Julia Garner

Madonna Biopic Still On, Says Julia Garner

Hollywood is hung up on Madonna, but a biopic remains a frozen secret. Regardless, the legendary singer’s life is going to make it to screen eventually — although whether it gets to the small or big screen first is yet to be determined. This week, “Weapons” star Julia Garner — who was announced to star in a Madonna movie way back in 2022 — confirmed on the podcast “Smartless” that, in spite of reports to the contrary, the project “Like a Virgin” is still very much in gestation.

“That’s supposed to still happen,” she said (via Variety). Garner was set to star alongside Julia Fox, who would play Madonna BFF and frequent music video co-star Debi Mazar. Fox spoke with IndieWire in 2024 about the movie’s reported shelving by Universal, seeming similarly ambiguous.

'Thunderball' with Sean Connery as James Bond 007
    Lindsay Lohan

“I know it was gonna be either tour or movie and then she went on tour,” Fox said. “So I don’t know when the movie will be picking back up again or when they’re going to start working on it again. But I didn’t hear anything. I actually don’t know … I mean, I’d still love to but I genuinely don’t know. They are going back, you know, when they’re like 19 and they first meet. I feel like I might have already aged out of that casting, but we’ll see.”

On Smartless, Garner said she was enthused to take on Madonna, because she “just wanted to see if [she] could do it.” The film was — or is — to be directed by the “Vogue” icon herself, for whom Garner auditioned. “I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing… And sing with her!” Garner related.

Madonna shared on Instagram a year ago that she was still working on the screenplay. “I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..OKAY,” she wrote, adding, “Story of my life.”

The movie, however, isn’t the only Madonna story in the works. In May, Deadline revealed that a Netflix series is planned — and Garner does have a long history with the streamer, remaining a mainstay with “Ozark,” “Inventing Anna,” and an upcoming limited series about the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The Madonna TV show would be executive produced by the “A League of Their Own” star, alongside “Stranger Things” EP Shawn Levy.

Whether a series or a film, Madonna’s story would be the latest boomer artist bio in what has become a reliable awards-friendly genre. Just last season, Timothée Chalamet earned an Oscar nod as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” while Kingsley Ben-Adir also got stellar notices for his portrayal of Bob Marley. In recent years, Austin Butler was nominated for his role in and as “Elvis,” and Rami Malek won the Academy Award for playing Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This doesn’t even begin to touch on the boomer artist docs — like the Grammy-winning “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice” or the Peter Jackson-directed “The Beatles: Get Back.”

As for Madonna, when whatever it becomes will happen remains uncertain. After all, life is a mystery, as she told us in “Like a Prayer.” Whenever a film drops, though, Garner assures it will be worthwhile. “Anything that’s great… takes a long time,” she said.

  • Wrigley Field, Cubs to host 2027 All-Star Game

Wrigley Field, Cubs to host 2027 All-Star Game

The Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field will host the 2027 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, commissioner Rob Manfred announced Friday.

The game will be played July 13, 2027.

“The hard work put in to transform all of Wrigleyville into an outstanding destination deserves to be celebrated and shared on a national stage,” Manfred said in a statement. “We look forward to bringing the Midsummer Classic back to historic Wrigley Field and working alongside the Cubs, city and state officials, and the local organizing group to bring an extraordinary experience to the baseball fans of Chicago.”

Wrigley Field will host the All-Star Game for the fourth time. The American League won the previous meetings in 1947, 1962 and 1990.

The 1990 All-Star Game was known for a historically low offensive output. The National League was held to two hits, the fewest for an All-Star team in history. The eight-man Home Run Derby field combined to hit five home runs, with Ryne Sandberg winning the contest with three homers.

The Cubs first approached MLB about hosting an All-Star Game eight years ago. But for a variety of reasons, including competition from other cities and safety concerns with the ballpark in a bustling neighborhood, they weren’t awarded one until now. Chicago cleared a big hurdle in June, when the city passed an ordinance allowing sidewalks along Addison Street to be widened and removable bollards to be installed around the ballpark.

“I think we’re probably overdue in terms of being at Wrigley,” Manfred said. “The Ricketts family, city of Chicago and state of Illinois made a tremendous investment not just in the ballpark but the area around it. I think it’ll be a fantastic venue for our All-Star celebration.”

Wrigley Field is set to join Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium and the old Yankee Stadium as the only ballparks to host four All-Star Games. The city of Chicago will host the event for the eighth time, second only to New York with nine.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Cubs fan, attended Friday’s announcement and called Wrigley Field “the perfect place to host the All-Star Game.”

“For over 100 years, this has been the beating heart of the baseball world and a shining emblem of our nation’s favorite pastime,” he said. “There’s no place like it.”

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts lived in the neighborhood the last time the Cubs hosted the All-Star Game. But he wasn’t able to attend.

“I didn’t have dough,” he said.

Ricketts figures to have an up-close view this time, assuming the game is played as scheduled. There is some doubt with baseball’s collective bargaining agreement set to expire after the 2026 season, though Manfred expressed confidence that the owners and players will avoid a lengthy work stoppage.

Asked about a potential contingency plan if there is a strike or lockout, he said: “My contingency plan is to make an agreement with the players and play the 2027 season.”

The 2026 All-Star Game will take place in Philadelphia as part of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
