  • Gutsy effort not enough for Canada’s Shapovalov in NBO ousting

Gutsy effort not enough for Canada’s Shapovalov in NBO ousting

TORONTO — When Denis Shapovalov broke his opponent’s serve for the second time in the second set on Tuesday night, the Canadian yelled and jumped in the air as the home crowd roared, and then Shapovalov brought his hand up to his ear, asking for more.

The fans delivered. As hard as Shapovalov tried, though, he could not.

On the Sobeys Stadium centre court, the 26-year-old from nearby Richmond Hill lost a 7-6 (4), 7-5 decision to 19-year-old American Learner Tien at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, a loss to a lower-ranked opponent that Shapovalov said was “probably completely mental” as he failed to take advantage at key moments in the match.

“I wasn’t beaten — I lost today,” a straight-faced Shapovalov said when it was over. “I had the match. I had the first set, I had the second set, and just a little bit of nerves, a little bit of, yeah, just didn’t go my way.”

Shapovalov added: “It sucks, of course.”

And so Shapovalov, who’s ranked 29th in the world, is one and done at his home tournament, ousted by an American ranked 61st. Shapovalov hasn’t won a match at his national open in six years. He didn’t know that, though: “I don’t keep track,” he said.

It looked really good for the crowd favourite to get back in the winner’s circle at the NBO at times on Tuesday. Shapovalov earned an early break in the opening set, pumped a fist and then fired three aces in his next service game. But any momentum he gained was short-lived.

In the first-set tiebreaker, Learner was up 4-2 when the crowd broke into cheers of “Let’s go Shapo!” (clap, clap, clap, clap, clap). The Canadian couldn’t claw his way back to win the set, though he threw himself to the court to make a couple of great returns on the final point before eventually sending the ball wide.

“I felt fine after the first set because I felt like the set should have been mine, I just kind of messed up serving for the set,” Shapovalov said.

He was fired up from the start Tuesday: Pumping his fists and yelling “yeah!” and “come on!” when he won big points. But the lefty said he never truly felt “comfortable” on the court, pointing out the wide-open stadium felt “pretty swirly,” as he put it. “I felt like my feet weren’t adjusting great to the ball today.”

Shapovalov came into this tournament riding a four-game win streak following a tournament win in Los Cabos, Mexico, at an ATP 250 event where he didn’t drop a single set en route to his second title of the season.

The former world No. 10 and 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist has been on a long road returning from a knee injury that saw him miss half of the 2023 season. When he returned in January of 2024, Shapovalov’s world ranking had tumbled to 137th.

Shapovalov’s loss was part of a disappointing day for Canadians on the hard court. In the morning in Montreal, 2019 NBO champion Bianca Andreescu withdrew due to an ankle injury she sustained in her opener. Then in the early afternoon, Leylah Fernandez, fresh off the biggest title win of her career two days earlier in Washington — and still tired from the win — was upset in her afternoon match.

Shapovalov had a great run at his national tournament back in 2017 when he upset world No. 2 Rafael Nadal and advanced to the semifinals. His last win at the NBO came in 2019, when he beat world No. 40 Pierre-Hughes Hebert, and he’s 0-5 here ever since.

On Tuesday night, Shapovalov earned an early break in the second set, but gave up a break on his next service game, ending with a double fault — one of eight he’d register.

“I never felt like I’m being outplayed or this match is slipping away,” Shapovalov said. “It’s just a little bit unfortunate. Too many mistakes today.”

When he made his last mistake of the night, sending a backhand wide, Shapovalov removed his white hat and walked up to the net to shake hands. Then he walked off the court and gave a small wave to the crowd. His eighth appearance at the NBO lasted just an hour and 35 minutes.

“I didn’t feel, until maybe the very end, that I was going to lose this match,” he said.

  • Is Blythe Dead on ‘Countdown’? Jensen Ackles, Derek Haas, More Break Down Episode 8 (Exclusive)

Is Blythe Dead on ‘Countdown’? Jensen Ackles, Derek Haas, More Break Down Episode 8 (Exclusive)

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Countdown Season 1 Episode 8 “The Nail in the Chair.”]

Hold on a moment: Has Countdown just killed off the task force’s leader?!

The latest episode ends with Blythe (Eric Dane) bleeding out after arriving for a late-night meeting in an alley and running into some serious trouble. Elsewhere, Oliveras (Jessica Camacho) tries to convince Meachum (Jensen Ackles) to tell their boss about his brain tumor, and the two share a moment outside his house. Plus, Shepherd (Violette Beane) gets a visit from her sister.

Below, stars Jensen Ackles, Jessica Camacho, and Bogdan Yasinksi, and creator Derek Haas break down those key moments.

    Did Volchek Just Kill Blythe?!

Astapov (Pasha D. Lychnikoff) from the Belarusian consulate finally agrees to cooperate with Blythe with Volchek (Bogdan Yasinski) intending to set off a dirty bomb in Los Angeles. But when Blythe arrives at the meeting, in an alley that Astapov chooses, he finds the other man dead — and then Volchek stabs him in the side. He flees at the sight of headlights and leaves the knife in Blythe. But Countdown isn’t about to kill off Eric Dane’s character, right?!

Eric Dane as Blythe — 'Countdown' Season 1 Episode 8 "The Nail in the Chair"

    Prime Video

“You’re going to see in the first two minutes [of Episode 9] the strength and resilience of a guy who obviously had a military background, has been on multiple task forces, has gone through FBI training, and it’s going to take every ounce of his strength to even try to put up a red flare for help,” Haas says. “You’re going to see in those first two minutes Eric’s acting is off the charts. And I like a show where we keep the audience on its toes and you think that everybody’s going to make it through, but they don’t all make it through.” After all, the task force already lost one member, Jonathan Togo‘s Drew, in Episode 4.

As for why he wanted to raise the stakes like this at this point in the season, “It feels like both the villain’s storyline and the task force’s storyline were getting on a collision course anyway. And I hadn’t really had a chance to get Blythe out of the office too much,” the creator explains. “I always described him as he could wrangle politically as well as strategically on the task force. I wanted to see that he could be in a senator’s hallway, but also down in the grit of Los Angeles, so it was really my first chance to get him out of the office and then it was not a great first chance for him. But I wanted a one-on-one with Volckek and it doesn’t go so well.”

We can’t help but wonder if Volchek has specifically targeted Blythe in addition to Astapov, or if it’s just happenstance that the agent shows up.

“It’s not a coincidence,” confirms Yasinski, pointing out that he waited after killing Astapov. “He must’ve been tracking them, following somehow. He’s got a whole network and he’s got some capital behind him. He can do some stuff, he can hire [people]all kinds of things. I think this is his chance to not only take revenge on this threat, but also play that next-level chess move: whoever I can get. Maybe he didn’t know it was going to be Blythe, but I think that’s a good BOGO deal. If you’re going to be in that alley, that’s a solid offer.”

Meachum Keeps Tumor Secret From Blythe

After Meachum tells Oliveras about his brain tumor, she insists he tell Blythe. However, just as he’s about to in this episode, they’re called to the scene when a Gallagher truck — which they’ve traced to Volchek — is found outside a federal building. (There’s no bomb, but there are cameras.) Sure, Meachum doesn’t want to be benched, but it’s not like that would keep him from working the case. But that’s not the only reason he’s keeping quiet.

“I don’t think he wants the sympathy,” Jensen Ackles tells us. “I don’t think he wants the pity that could come with telling somebody about your situation. I think he wants to keep that as close to the vest as possible because he doesn’t want people to look at him differently. So I think he used kind of being benched as the external excuse, but I was really believing — and trying to play — that it was much deeper than that, that it was the turn that people would start to look at you different or treat you differently now that they know what’s going on with you. And he does not want that.”

Adds Haas, “I actually think that what Oliveras says to him gets through to him and he is going to come clean. I don’t think that would ever stop him from pursuing the investigation, even if he is sidelined; he doesn’t really follow people’s orders anyway. But I do think he wants to come clean because what she said makes a lot of sense and it is selfish what he’s doing.”

Jessica Camacho has said that Oliveras would probably do the same thing Meachum is, not just sitting on a beach to leave out his final days but trying to save the city, so does that mean she’d also keep a diagnosis from her boss like he is?

“I honestly don’t know,” Camacho says. “She wouldn’t want to just be back at home with her feet up knowing that the people that she’s come to care about, her partners, are risking their lives in this very unique way to save so many people, and it’s a part of her DNA now, it’s in her cells to get up and go do something about it. She doesn’t know what to do because she’s like, ‘I need you. I need you by my side as my partner. We need you. But also I care about these other people, too. You’re putting them at risk. You’re putting me at risk.’”

She adds that Oliveras also looks at the situation as, “‘I got him.’ I think that’s why she keeps such a close eye on him. She’s like, ‘I’m the only one who knows what’s going on. So this is what it is. This is what he needs, this is what he wants, and we have this mission. At least I’m by his side.’ She’s got a lot on her plate. She really does.”

    Meachum & Oliveras’s Moment

When Oliveras drops Meachum at home near the end of the episode, the two share a moment when he suggests she crash at his place (he’ll take the couch) and even offers to make the noises of her sound machine. She ultimately turns him down, telling him she’s not his ex-fiancée or her sister, so it wouldn’t work.

Jessica Camacho as Oliveras and Jensen Ackles as Meachum — 'Countdown' Season 1 Episode 8 "The Nail in the Chair"

    Prime Video

“I thought that scene turned out dynamite,” raves Haas. When it comes to that slow burn, “What I want is these two who, in a very stressful, emotional, heightened place, don’t want to do this the wrong way and think that, did we do this just because all of our feelings were out on the table? Not to mention that Meachum’s going through what he’s going through. I just think they need to get their stars aligned prior to something more potentially they could hurt each other’s friendship.”

For Oliveras, that situation is “messy,” Camacho says, “and she doesn’t like messy. She likes clean-cut, she likes simple, straightforward, and this potential situation is anything but that. It’s vulnerable and layered. And they depend on one another. They’re partners, they work together, and you see them discovering this other kind of pull, this curiosity, this shared kind of knowledge that they have, this shared understanding, and this bond that’s kind of just naturally organically created that has its own pull. So she’s stuck. She’s like, ‘Goodnight, I gotta go.’ I don’t think she knows what to do with it all.”

    Shepherd’s Sister Visits

As if dealing with the major threat to Los Angeles isn’t enough, Shepherd also has to contend with her sister, Molly (Michelle DeShon), visiting — despite her not answering her calls and telling her mother she can’t be there at the moment. The first thing Molly wants to do is go out with her sister, but Shepherd declines, reminding her she’s on a task force and telling her to think about someone other than herself (and that it’s not safe in LA). Molly, in return, says that with no audience there, she can save it for someone who doesn’t know how she used to be. Yes, Molly is named after Haas’s mother, just like the bar on Chicago Fire is.

“I named the bar after my mom because my mom is from Texas, never drank in her life, is a total teetotaler. And so I thought this would also be funny that the messed-up sister is named Molly. It’s an inside joke only to me and my family,” the creator says.

“I thought it was a cool notion to do it where the younger sibling is the one who’s gotten their life together and the older sibling is the one that needs to have some tough love. You’re always trying to flip cards on characters, especially when you do have plans for the show to continue. It was a 13-episode show and you can’t give everybody all the information right away. And I like it when it’s like, ‘Oh, I didn’t see that coming,’” he continues. “So now an audience member is going to be like, what was Shepherd like before she joined the FBI? Will that rear its head at some point? So [it’s] a little glimpse into Shepherd’s personal life.”

Violett Beane as Shepherd — 'Countdown' Season 1 Episode 8 "The Nail in the Chair"

    Prime Video

It’s also about showing how family members react to a person’s job. “I think in these shows, when you’re doing a crime show, a lot of times people think that the law enforcement characters’ lives are only about what’s happening on the show, and everybody who’s ever worked a job knows that in real life, it’s not like that. Your family does not respect your deadlines a lot of the times and you’ll say, ‘I’ve got this going on.’ They’ll be like, ‘Oh, you’re being dramatic,’” Haas explains. “And that’s true of FBI agents and task force members and police, and this investigation is not a weeklong investigation. Most task forces sometimes go on for years, and life doesn’t stop. And so I just thought it would be an interesting dramatic element to have a family member who is not respectful of what’s going on in the world.”

    That Flashback

In a flashback to 2021, Volchek is brought in by the LAPD for bribing a city official, and while he’s in a LAPD precinct, Meachum and Finau (Uli Latukefu) just so happen to walk by talking about a case.
“I just loved that idea that — I think about this a lot, right? I’ve been married for 30 years now and we met when we were in college and I wonder how many times our paths crossed prior to that. I worked in a mall and at a shoe store in high school and I just wonder who passed me by that I have no idea, and then our fates … and I just thought the audience would get a real kick out of seeing that they were this close to what was going to end up being their prey later,” Haas says.

Julia Roberts’ career is packed with great moviesbut did you know she’s never starred in a sequel to one of them? Well, that could finally change thanks to some news about a sequel that’s apparently going into early development. The word is that Sony is working on a followup to 1997’s My Best Friend’s Wedding with Celine Song, and I need to talk about it.

I’m All Over Celine Song Making A Sequel To My Best Friend’s Wedding

In recent months, we’re seeing a lot of movies from the 1990s and early 2000s get starstudded sequels, from Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep filming the second The Devil Wears Pradato Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman being in Practical Magic 2. Per Colliderone of the most beloved Julia Roberts movies of her rom-com era could be next.

The only name currently attached to the project is Celine Song, who just put out her second movie, Materialistsstarring Chris Evans, Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal. We gave the movie a five out of five in our Materialists review for how Song was gracefully able to discuss modern dating and love through her unique romance film. The movie is a followup to her 2023 debut, Past Liveswhich has also become a quick favorite among cinephiles.

While it’s early days for the sequel to My Best Friend’s WeddingI love the idea of such a talented and critically-acclaimed filmmaker being behind it – 1, because it could attract Julia Roberts to reprise her role, and 2, it could give us a rare worthwhile sequel that doesn’t feel simply like a cash grab. Celine Song has a really solid hold on crafting great romance stories, and as soon as I saw this report, I was immediately interested in her take on Julianne Potter and who she might be over 25 years later.

What Could Happen In A Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel?

That brings me to thinking about what a Best Friend’s Wedding sequel could be. As you might recall, the original movie follows lifelong friends, Roberts’ Jules and Dermot Mulroney’s Michael, who once made a pact that they would marry each other if they were both unmarried by age 28. However, just weeks before Jules’ 28th birthday, he calls her to let her know that he’s set to get married. Jules doesn’t take it well, and decides to sabotage the affair. Ultimately, Michael marries his bride Kimmy (played by Cameron Diaz).

Julia Roberts has commented about how her view on the character has changed since making the movie, pointing out Jules as a “pretty dodgy character,” which has me interested in how the actress could explore that further for a sequel. Maybe Michael flees to Jules after dealing with problems in his relationship with Kimmy, and Kimmy becomes the one ready to sabotage?

Dermot Mulroney also commented on the sequel just a few days ago to The New York Postconfirming “there is talk of a sequel.”. It’s still early, but I very much hope the sequel happens with Celine Song, and the main cast from the 1997 movie.

Some clubs have already been active swappers: the Yankees have obtained two infielders (Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario), while the Mariners grabbed Josh Naylor to secure first base. Who will be the next player sent packing to a new home? Below, CBS Sports has gathered all of Tuesday’s most notable news and moves in one convenient spot.

Are the Astros and Cease a match?

Padres All-Star starting pitcher Dylan Cease is “at the top of the Astros’ wish list,” according to The Athletic. And there have been whispers that the Padres would deal Cease — a free agent at season’s end — as long as they could improve their major-league roster as a result. The question, then, would be if the Astros had enough offensive depth to put together a deal with MLB-caliber talent that the Padres would take in return for Cease.

The Padres could use a big bat at DH and would probably want more than just one player for Cease.

The Astros have been cursed with a litany of rotation injuries, including Lance McCullers Jr., Ronel Blanco, Spencer Arrighetti, J.P. France, Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier. They are expecting returns from several of them in the coming weeks, but the prospect of putting Cease with Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez in the playoff rotation might be enough to make the Astros bite here.

    Blue Jays add arm

The Blue Jays are acquiring right-handed reliever Seranthony Domínguez and cash from the Orioles in exchange for pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown, according to Sportsnet.

Domínguez, 30, is an impending free agent who has compiled a 3.24 ERA (122 ERA+) and a 2.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 41 innings so far this season.

    Watts-Brown, 23, was a third-round pick in 2023. He’s tallied a 3.54 ERA and a 3.03 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 19 starts split between High- and Double-A.

The Blue Jays remain intrigued by Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, suggesting that Domínguez may be the first but perhaps not the last bullpen addition they make this week.

Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies in on closer

Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley said last week that he expects to be traded ahead of the deadline. If that proves to be the case, then expect him to land on a heavy hitter. Among the teams showing interest are the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Phillies, Rangers, and Blue Jays, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

“It’s a little bit different this time,” Helsley said recently. “The likelihood is probably as great as it’s ever been for me to get traded.” He added: “I would say it’s 90% I go, 10% I stay.”

Helsley, an impending free agent, has a 3.00 ERA and a 2.93 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 36 innings to date.

It’s to be seen if and how much the Rays sell this deadline, but both the Mets and Astros have shown interest in second baseman Brandon Lowe, according to the New York Post.

Lowe, 31, is currently on the injured list on account of foot/ankle tendinitis, though he is expected to return as soon as Wednesday. In 86 games this season, he’s hit .269/.320/.480 (121 OPS+) with 19 home runs and three stolen bases. His contributions have been worth an estimated 1.2 Wins Above Replacement, per Baseball Reference.

Lowe is technically controllable through next season, thanks to a club option in his contract. It’s perhaps worth noting that, while he’s played outfield in the past, he’s almost exclusively been stationed at the keystone the last few seasons.

Dodgers manager says Rushing won’t be dealt

Although Dodgers rookie backstop Dalton Rushing has had his name surface in trade rumors as of late, manager Dave Roberts said on Monday that he doesn’t foresee a deal occurring.

“I haven’t talked to Dalton,” Roberts told The Orange County Register. “I just don’t see a world in which he’s moved anyway, and I think he’s smart enough to realize that.”

Rushing, 24, entered the season ranked by CBS Sports as the 22nd-best prospect in the sport. He made his big-league debut on May 15, though he’s seldom played since, appearing just 29 times and posting a .545 OPS while serving as Will Smith’s backup.

Nevertheless, the Dodgers don’t seem inclined to trade Rushing — at least not if their manager is to be believed.

Dodgers, Blue Jays interested in Kwan

How much the Guardians’ deadline plans are (or aren’t) impacted by closer Emmanuel Clase’s placement on paid leave while MLB investigates potential gambling misdeeds, but both the Dodgers and Blue Jays are interested in outfielder Steven Kwan if he is made available, according to The Athletic.

    player headshot

Kwan, 27, has hit .287/.351/.411 (111 OPS+) with nine home runs and 11 stolen bases in 100 games to date. His contributions have been worth an estimated 3.3 Wins Above Replacement, according to Baseball Reference. Kwan is technically under team control through the 2027 season, meaning that the Guardians do not necessarily have to move him.

Rather, the Guardians could hold onto Kwan and attempt to make the playoffs themselves. They’re four games back of a spot, yet they stand to benefit from one of the weakest remaining schedules in the majors.

Count the Brewers among the teams with interest in Orioles first baseman/outfielder Ryan O’Hearn, according to The Athletic. The Brewers were, reportedly, also one of the clubs who tried for Josh Naylor before he was sent to Seattle.

    player headshot

O’Hearn, 32, is one of the best remaining bats on the trade market. In 92 games to date, he’s hit .284/.375/.452 (134 OPS+) with 12 home runs. He’s by and large been used in a platoon role during his time with the Orioles, which helps explain how he’s reduced his strikeout rate and transformed from a seeming Quad-A slugger to a legitimate platoon ace — all after aging out of his presumed statistical prime.

O’Hearn is an impending free agent.
